Do you run your own business? Yes? Great! Now, is your business on social media? Customers cannot become your customers if they are unaware your brand exists! Social media increases your visibility among potential patrons by allowing you to reach an extensive audience with minimal time and effort. You have nothing to lose by creating a company presence online. After all, it is a proven fact that social media content attracts attention.
It’s easy to decide that your brand needs a social presence, but the tricky part comes when trying to decide what platform(s) are right for you. That’s what we’re here for. We’ve already done all the hard work for you, finding the key demographics to each site allowing you to make a knowledgeable decision about what platform best suits your brand. Even after this post, if you want more information, feel free to reach out- we’re here to help!
First, let’s look at Facebook. Facebook is one of the topmost visited social sites in 2020₁, only trailing behind Google and YouTube. There are more than 2.47 billion monthly active users around the world, increasing over 12% over the past year. That’s 2.47 billion potential customers to reach- almost 60% of the world’s social media using population! The average age group using the app are those aged 30-4. Meaning if your target market is past the teenage range, but younger than baby boomers, Facebook could be for you! Yet, it is important to take this info with a grain of salt. Remember, the reach of Facebook is so large that each age range is heavily represented. So, Facebook is a great option for those interested in increasing their reach in general.
Next, we should take a look at Facebook’s brother site, Instagram. Each month there are over 1 billion active users on the site which makes it the 4th most used mobile app₂. What makes Instagram so tempting for business owners is the simple fact that 81% of users specifically use Instagram to research products or services, and 50% of people have visited a website to make a purchase after seeing a product or service on their feeds₂.
Instagram is ideal for businesses that focus on a visual appeal- think real estate, retail, design, and dining. If you want to monetize simply off of the appearance of your product, Instagram is for you. Another detail to note is that the average age of Instagram users is a bit younger, 25-34, but with the same note as Facebook, Instagram has such a wide reach that each age range is heavily represented on the site.
Another widely popular site to look into is LinkedIn. LinkedIn has over 675 million active users worldwide, with over 9% of users visiting the site multiple times a day₃. The major drawing factor to LinkedIn is the demographic it attracts- the site pulls in a huge group of business professional users. This makes the site ideal for those in the fields of finance, real estate, B2B, and recruitment efforts. The average age of users is older too, with the range being 46-55. With such a high usage rate, consistent posting is key. At the end of the day, if your brand is looking to reach a more professional crowd, or simply just wants to extend your reach to a new audience, LinkedIn is for you!
The last major social media site we are going to cover is TikTok. TikTok has the youngest age range, with the largest portion of users aged 18-29. TikTok was the most popular iPhone app of 2020, with nearly 2 billion downloads worldwide₄. What makes TikTok so special is the personalized algorithm that makes each user’s feed different from the next. Thanks to this fact, TikTok is ideal for those businesses looking for brand awareness. Additionally, engagement on the app is the highest of all social media platforms, meaning that videos can amass up to millions of views within hours. Though there is no real way to determine what will garner these results, it helps that there are long lists of trending sounds, dances, and hashtags to follow to help boost your videos.
At the end of the day, it is crucial that businesses are active on social media- regardless of what their service is. All brands will benefit from the exposure social media brings and, if anything, will receive increased traffic to your website, hopefully leading to an increase in sales.
